The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – June 3, 2010

How good was Ken Griffey, Jr.? “The Kid” hit 630 homers and is virtually guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame; yet when people talk about him the first thing they say is, “Imagine how good he would have been if he didn’t have all those injuries” . . .

Last night the Yankees again pounded the American League punching bags, the Baltimore Orioles. Robinson Cano stretched his hitting streak to 16 games while Phil Hughes won his seventh game . . .

Detroit Tigers hurler Armando Gallaraga lost his bid for a perfect-game with two outs in the ninth inning because of an admitted blown call by first base umpire Jim Joyce. It was a tough break for Gallaraga, but Joyce deserves credit for owning up to the mistake and even visiting the Tigers locker room after the game to apologize. That takes character . . .

The Diamondbacks lost their 10th consecutive game yesterday. Their latest display of futility was a 14-inning,1-0 decision to the Dodgers .

Nhl Hockey: Bruins At Maple Leafs Odds – 7:00Pm Est

The fans at Air Canada Centre will be treated to a game between the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs when they take their seats on Tuesday night at 7:00pm EST in a game that can be seen on NESN and RSNO television. NHL odds makers have the Bruins listed as 120-moneyline betting favorites against the Maple Leafs while the game’s total is sitting at 5 OVER -140. The Bruins lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 as a +145 underdog in NHL betting odds on Sunday. The three goals scored fell UNDER the posted over/under total of 5.5 at online sportsbooks.

Blake Wheeler scored the Bruins only goal and Tom Thomas made 31 saves as Boston ended their 5 game road winning streak. There was a bit of controversy as the Bruins played without Marc Savard after suffering a concussion in the third period from being struck in the head by the Penguins Matt Cooke. “It’s pretty obvious that was definitely a dirty hit,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien after the

Penguins-Wings look for three-peat

To borrow an NHL slogan from seasons past, the biggest question heading into this year’s post-season can be simply summed up as: Is this the year? Is this the year the Detroit Red Wings and the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins give other teams a chance to play for the Stanley Cup?

If so, will the San Jose Sharks finally step up in the Western Conference and live up to their lofty regular-season marks and shake their underachieving reputation? If not, will the upstart Chicago Blackhawks or surprising Phoenix Coyotes unseat the Red Wings, who won the Cup in 2008 against the Penguins and then fell in seven games a year ago in the rematch.

The answers will begin to unfold Wednesday night when the 16-team Stanley Cup tournament gets under way with four games. Three other series will start Thursday, and the Central Division-champion Blackhawks will host the Nashville Predators on Friday in Game 1 of that Western matchup.

NHL ? History of Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings were founded on February 9, 1966 when Jack Kent Cooke was awarded an NHL expansion franchise for Los Angeles.  Prior to the Kings arrival in LA, both the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Hockey League had several team in the California area.  These teams included the Los Angeles Monarchs of the 1930′s and the Los Angeles Blades of the 1960′s.

The NHL decided to expand for the 1967-68 season, Canadian entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke paid the NHL million dollars to place one of the six expansion teams in LA.  Cooke was awarded this placement along with the other franchise expansion teams which included: the California Seals, Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the St. Louis Blues.  Cooke named his placement team the Kinds and picked the colors of purple and gold because they were traditional colors of royalty.  The same colors were also adopted by the LA Lakers, which Cooke also

Mike Weir inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame

Mike Weir was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame on Saturday night at Huron Oaks, the course where the left-hander fell in love with the game.

“It’s special to do it here,” said Weir, the 2003 Masters champion. “I see a lot of family and friends. Obviously, it’s kind of where I grew up and where it all began for me. I feel good. It’s a great night.”

Mike Weir tied for second place at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio this past weekend. The former Masters champion is starting to find his game as he prepares for next week’s challenging U.S. Open. Weir shot 71 on the final day (one-under-par) finishing the tournament at -6, which was two strokes back of third-time winner Kenny Perry. His course-management skill, exceptional short game, and accurate putting defined his 2003 Masters win and were apparent in his play this weekend. Weir will be in need of these assets, as well as more quality shots, to have any success at the coming U.S.

Ny Islanders Tickets Tips and History

The New York (NY) Islanders is one of the two ice hockey teams from New York. The NY Islanders were formed to block the upstart New York Raiders of the World Hockey Association (WHA), and the WHA itself from placing its team at the newly constructed Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Nassau County. Officials of the Nassau County wanted nothing to do with WHA, which they did not consider to be a professional league. They sought the help of William Shea, who had brought the New York Mets to the area. Shea, with the help of the then NHL president – Clarence Campbell – had a franchise awarded to Roy Boe, a clothing manufacturer and owner of American Basketball Association’s New York Nets, to form another team in the NHL league.

Expecting to be named the Long Island Ducks, the team was surprisingly named the New York Islanders. Playing in the Atlantic Division of the NHL, the NY Islanders are based at Uniondale, New York.

[ Part 5 Here - www.youtube.com ] Follow my YouTube video updates on Twitter. – twitter.com The HBO Sports documentary Broad Street Bullies, a look at one of pro sports most polarizing teams, the legendary Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup championship squads of the 1970s. This exclusive presentation will tell the backstories of these engaging and colorful athletes, who won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 with a bold, aggressive style that sparked controversy and criticism. HBOs Broad Street Bullies is an excellent and well-produced documentary that portrays the evolution of the Philadelphia Flyers, said Comcast-Spectacor chairman and Flyers founder Ed Snider. It brings back many wonderful memories for me, and it uncovers some new insights into the great story of our two Stanley Cup Championship teams. We are truly honored that this part of Philadelphia Flyers history will be seen nationally on HBO. I want to personally thank producer George Roy and his talented team for this historical tribute to the Flyers. This film explores how a group of characters, who also happened to be an extraordinarily talented collection of hockey players that enjoyed contact on the ice, formed one of the most prominent and controversial teams in pro sports history, says Ross Greenburg, president, HBO Sports. We are going to re-trace the steps that led to the love affair between the city and the team, and show how to this day these players are revered in Philadelphia and despised

When It Comes To Sports – I’m Blacked Out

It is a trend that quite frankly has irritated me for quite some time now. I know I shouldn’t be that concerned with such trivial matters as the color scheme of a few pro sports teams, especially in light of all the financial and political chaos in this country, but I am. Sports are about tradition and tradition has always been about building something meaningful and being proud of what you are and where you come from.
I did not reach my level of concern without first trying to understand and adapt to the current trend in pro sports apparel. I considered that black may be slimming and, that alone would be a legitimate reason to adopt the color. However this method of reasoning soon left my mind when I gazed upon Warren Sapp looking just as fat in Raider silver and black as he did in Buccaneer red and pewter. We’ll discuss pewter later!
I know my disgust will not be enough to cause a sufficient ground swell of emotions to overturn this trend in sports

Baltimore/Washington International | Limo 4 Less

If you’re traveling over the holidays, chances are you’re not looking forward to spending time in a crowded, stressful airport. Faced with the prospect of long waits, deafening public-address systems, and indigestion, you may quickly lose that festive feeling.

O’Hare Airport in Chicago ranked third because 90 percent of its restaurants offer low-fat, fiber-rich, veggie-heavy meals.

Still, airports are not all bad. In fact, based on research Health magazine has done to find America’s Healthiest airports, some are actually working hard to make your traveling experience healthier by offering nutritious food, special relaxation zones, walking paths, the latest safety technology, and a whole lot more. We scored the nation’s major airports, see how we did it, and then asked a panel of expert judges (meet them here) to help us choose the top 10.
